Swear Word uttered in "The Yokes on Me"?
« on: March 29, 2005, 01:34:25 PM »
Can anyone confirm that the old man Smithers in this episode from 1944 says "bastard" to the car he traded with the boys for the farm when the car doesnt start when talking to the sheriff?

My copy from vhs sounds like the old man cussed at the car.....  ???

Wow, Titmouse, that is slightly confusing, opening the same topic in two different places. I think the moderators will have to rectify that. I haven't watched The Yoke's On Me for ages, as it was never one of my favourites, so I couldn't tell you unless I went and rooted through all my videos for it.
Whilst we are on the subject, it always sounded to me like Bud Jamison says "Shit!" when he's trying to get down behind the desk in A-Ducking They Did Go.

I haven't seen The Yoke's on Me or A Duckin We Will Go so can't comment on any swears but I remember Moe says the word ejaculate in Uncivil Warbirds.  Brother you just ejaculated a mouthful.  When I heard that I didn't think much of it but I guess it was quite unusual for the 60's on TV. Right.

Yeah, I did notice the word 'ejaculated' being used in "Uncivil War Birds". I found that quite disturbing.

I can also hear "shit" muttered in Ducking.
it sounds as if Bud slammed his knee into the desk when they all dropped down and said cause of that. Another stooge goof!

Yeah, I did notice the word 'ejaculated' being used in "Uncivil War Birds". I found that quite disturbing.

As the local English usage maven, I ought to point out that another legitimate meaning of "ejaculate" is "To utter suddenly and briefly; to exclaim." Also, in the noun form, "ejaculation" is "An abrupt, exclamatory utterance."

However, it's also "The act or process of ejaculating, especially the discharge of semen by the reproductive organs."

All definitions are from the Random House Webster's College Dictionary, 2001 edition. So, what you've got here is a double-entendre by Moe that the censors couldn't have possibly cut, because in context, Moe is using the first definition, but practically everyone in the audience is going to get the reference to the second...

Brilliant!

And "mouthful" definitely puts it over the top.  :-\  [noevils]

I'm brand spanking new to the message boards so if I overstep any rules Pardon Pardon.  I recently commented on not seeing A Ducking They Did Go and Yoke's on Me.  What I meant was I hadn't seen them probably since 1965.  I would love to see A Ducking They Did Go.  Anyway I know ejaculate (Uncivil War Birds) wasn't a big deal back then but today it might be.  I love The Three Stooges ever since I was 6 in 1961 and saw them every weekday morning.  Since this is Q & A why do you think they brought back the  cut scene in Uncivil Warriors with the little Black baby and kept it out in the 60's.  We're more politically correct now than ever.

That's interesting - I'm the same age and I seem to remember seeing Uncivil Warriors with that scene in it back then. [confused]

Speaking of Uncivil Warriors (perhaps their best short all agree) I must admit I never did see that scene when Moe brings back the baby to the beautiful Mrs. Dodge.  Curly says "He looks just like the captain."  At that point we could tell scenes had been cut out.  It continues "Looks like you does he."  Here! What'll I do with it?"  They cut out the little black kid and Moe saying "We had him down the beach all summer he got quite sunburned."  That was all cut out in 1960-up.  When I saw that short sometime in the "80s you can imagine my surprise to see the uncut version.  That's my story and I'm sticking with it.   ;D

Love the play on words in the title "Yoke's on Me."  Yolk and yoke...yuk yuk. They had some very clever titles for their shorts.  How High is Up, Slippery Silks, Restless Knights, An Ache in Every Stake, Three Little Sew and Sews, and my favorite Some More of Samoa.

Let's not forget about the Giva Dam, or about the 'Fish Market Duet'. "We sing for the Halibut."

I must have an edited version of that short because Bud ddn't say anything but he looked like he wasn't very happy

Hi,

This thread made me remember in "Heavenly Daze" and/or "Bedlam in Paradise" where the girl says her name is "Helen Blazes".

And I like the Stooges' recording of "Three Little Fishies" from "Nonsense Songbook" where Larry says "He's trying to get us to say 'damn'!"

Which makes me think of a sign I saw in an old-time hardware store in rural New Jersey when I was a kid:

"Our Credit Manager's name is Helen Waite. If you want credit here, you can go to Helen Waite."

I finally viewed "The Yokes On Me" and the old man clearly says "Bastard" to the car.

I will definetly put the episode titles on all my video tapes for future references

I BELIEVE IT WAS IN "SQUAREHEADS OF THE ROUND TABLE".
SHEMP SAYS IT TO MOE WHEN THEY ARE PERFORMING FOR THE PRINCESS.

It was actually SQUAREHEADS OF THE ROUND TABLE's remake, KNUTZY KNIGHTS, where Shemp says that line.  I always wondered how they got away with using that word.
