  • That james bond thread got me thinking. What would you rank as his best if you were making a greatest hits Album? Lets keep it under 30 songs.

    Heres mine:

    1-Your Song
2-Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word
    3-The One
    4-Rocket Man
    5-Levon
    6-Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
    7-Tiny Dancer
    8-Daniel
    9-Blue Eyes
    10-Candle In The Wind
    11-Sad Songs (Say So Much)
12-Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me
    13-Someone Saved My Life Tonight
    14-Don't Go Breaking My Heart
    15-Philadelphia Freedom
    16-Little Jeannie
    17-Crocodile Rock
    18-Sacrifice
19-Can You Feel The Love Tonight
    20-Circle Of Life
    21-Believe
    22-Blessed
23-Something About The Way You Look Tonight
24- Mona Lisa's and Mad Hatters
    25-Honky Cat
    26-Bennie And The Jets
    27-Written In The Stars
    28-Island Girl

  • I really like Elton John, but I wouldn't call myself enough of an expert to compile a greatest hits.  There's other bands I can do it for, though.  I still wouldn't mind reading other lists.

  • Many of the hits are great songs, but I'm so burned out on many of them. "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" is one I never seem to get tired of. It's my favorite Elton/Bernie hit song.
Here's a bit of trivia. Did you know that Elton's drummer, Nigel Olsson, had a top 20 hit in 1978 with "Dancin' Shoes"?

  • By FAR, my fave is Madman across the water, and Someone saved my life tonite is 2nd.

The orchestration in Madman got me.

  • Your question takes me back to high school, in the early 70s, when I purchased every piece of vinyl John produced.  You know -- the no-responsibility idealistic adrenaline-driven years.  Here are my top ten:

    The greatest discovery
    Come down in time
    Goodbye
Think I'm going to kill myself
    Hercules
    Blues for baby and me
I want to be a teenage idol
Funeral for a friend/love lies bleeding
    I've seen the saucers
    Writing

Not to mention John's hit single versions of Lucy in the Sky and Pinball Wizard...

  • Geez, what a tough question. Well if I were making a "Jim's Favorite Elton John" album I would definitely keep it strictly 70's:

    Madman Across The Water
    The Bitch Is Back
    Harmony
    Levon
Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me
    Grey Seal
Love Lies Bleeding/Funeral For A Friend
    Daniel
    Rocket Man
    Your Song
    Take Me To The Pilot
    Burn Down The Mission
    Pinball Wizard
    Honky Cat
    Bennie And The Jets
    Philadelphia Freedom
...and there are probably a couple of others I am missing.

  • Seeing as how I'm a huge Elton John fan, I figured that I'd add my top 10 as well:
    1. Madman Across The Water (the version with Mick Ronson on guitar)
    2. Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding
    3. Someone Saved My Life Tonight
    4. Tiny Dancer
    5. Roy Rogers
    6. (Gotta Get a) Meal Ticket
    7. Sick City
    8. Crocodile Rock
    9. I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues
    10. Come Down In Time

Of course, there are a lot of other great songs, but I have to limit myself or I'd be on this thread forever.

  • ...and for the record, I'm a huge Alice Cooper fan.  Elton likes Alice too, and one of my favorite A.C. albums is FROM THE INSIDE, which was co written by Bernie Taupin.  Davey Johnstone played guitar with Alice around that time '78 - '79 and I have DVD footage.
