  • I finished watching the set today. Everything looked great. It was well worth the $20. I posted a review with screenshots in case any of you are interested in seeing how these look.

  • Just curious, but is there anybody here who's seeing any of these shorts for the first time, or are you all like me and just picking up that final upgrade to the collection?
Mainly a convenient upgrade (than all of the shoddy themed discs and my own personal compiled collections).

I'm sure most of us here have seen all the Curly's. When (and if) we reach the Shemp-era with these sets, then I think we'll start to see that a lot of us are watching some for the first time (or for the first time in awhile).

I went right after work to pick up my set. I couldn't wait. I don't buy too many DVDs anymore but anytime anything Stooges come out its kind of a must buy. Sad to say I was that way with the themed discs, too..

  • I just can't wait until Sony releases the rest of the shorts so I can sell my older DVDs. I can only imagine how much shelf space I'll end up with.

These are classic movies that were never filmed in HD so even if they are released in bluray, I doubt they would look any better.

From a technical standpoint, the films would benefit from a higher resolution presentation. In fact, the negatives would hold still more detail than any reasonably detailed digital scan could reproduce.

  • I received mine via USPS from Amazon on May 28. It didn't take long at all. The cost was $16.99, plus I bought something else, got my bill up above $25, & didn't have to pay shipping costs. Much cheaper than running around town burning $3.89 gasoline trying to find something that a store might not have anyway.

  • I got my copy a couple of days ago (Thursday, I think.)  We're watching the second disk right now (Saved by the Belle is on.)  It would have been nice if they added some commentary or home movies or something, but just having the shorts in such an excellent condition and in chronological order makes my day.

Keep 'em coming, Sony!  Keep the quality at this level and I guarantee that I will buy every set, including the Joes, and I doubt that I'm the only one.   ;D

  • Nobody here seems to have received their Amazon order by Tuesday 5/27. That's the problem with Amazon. They should ship pre-orders early enough so people will receive it by the release date.

Personally, I didn't really have a problem with the way the shorts were divided up on the two discs. The first 13 shorts (Grips, Grunts & Groans - Violent Is The Word For Curly) was on disc one and the last 11 (Three Missing Links - Three Sappy People) were on disc two. I'm sure there are some people here that would've preffered that all 1938 shorts were on one disc, but since there are 24 shorts divided up on two discs, it's kind of difficult.

  • I got my DVD set two days ago from Amazon. Pretty good job on the restoration of these films. One question I have is has the release date of Flat Foot Stooges been officially confirmed? The set has it placed between Mutts to You and Three Little Sew and Sews. Other sources placed it between Tassels in the Air and Healthy, Wealthy, and Dumb.

Sales rank on Amazon.com is pretty high. We better keep our fingers crossed for a 3rd volume.

According to my handy dandy Three Stooges Scrapbook, Flat Foot Stooges should have been placed between Tassels in the Air and Healthy, Wealthy, and Dumb. However, the scrapbook also notes that the short has three possible release dates: May 13, November 25, or December 5. This DVD set used either the November 25th or December 5th release date which is why it placed it between Mutts to You and Three Little Sew and Sews. According to this site, the release date is November 25th. I have great faith in Rob and the Team Stooges, so that should be the correct official release date. So, assuming that is the right date, this DVD set has placed the shorts in the correct order.

Release date of May 13, 1938 was disproved years ago. That was its probable production date, per Jules White's copy of the script, dated April 1938.

Studio records indicate two dates, Nov. 25 and Dec. 5, 1938... either way, FLAT FOOT STOOGES was the final release of that calendar year. Part 5 of Rich Finegan's trade magazine series in The Three Stooges Journal # 122 (Summer '07) indicates that FLAT FOOT was reviewed in the Feb. 4, 1939 issue of The Motion Picture Herald.

  • I'm starting to sell some of my older releases. I'm working on selling the colorized ones now. I just sold Stooges On The Run now for $7 on Ebay. I'm now going to sell Goofs on the Loose. I'm getting rid of those two DVDs because all the shorts on those DVDs are already released on the new set. With these new restored, chronological sets, I don't have any use for these colorized shorts anymore.

  • Just curious, but is there anybody here who's seeing any of these shorts for the first time, or are you all like me and just picking up that final upgrade to the collection?

Well, of the 190 Columbia shorts, I'd say I've seen 98% of them.  There are still a couple of Besser titles, such as "A Merry Mix-Up," I haven't seen.  When I first started to build a Stooges collection, it was back in the 1980s.  I was taping shorts off WTBS, and local San Antonio station KABB.  My VHS copies were recorded in EP and, unfortunately, not stored properly, so there's really no way to enjoy them now.  I started to rebuild my tape collection when AMC began airing the shorts.  Of course, they left 60 titles out of rotation.  Some of the shorts on this new set I have not seen since the 1980s on my original VHS.  Some of the titles I'm looking forward to the most include "We Want Our Mummy" and "Three Little Sew and Sews."  It will almost be like watching them for the first time.  I've viewed these on-line, but that's nowhere near as enjoyable as viewing them on a 36" TV set.  For the most part, though, the purchase of this new Sony set is for a final upgrade, and what an upgrade it is!
