Anyway, here's the scoop: they will be released chronologically, at least three years' worth at a time, at reasonable prices, to conclude in '09 with a box of all the features. In addition, there will be some extras, including the solo shorts of Shemp, Joe D and Joe B, and the half dozen or so Screen Snapshots they appeared in.

And they will NOT be colorized! That ship has sailed and sunk.

This would be nice, but I have to see it to believe it. The solo shorts would be a great volume all by themselves, instead, if they are included, we will probably only get a sampling from each series (and those will be the same ones out there offered by private collectors/trading circuits).

I am missing two Shemp solo Columbia shorts (not including a few he appeared in with Andy Clyde) and a handful of Besser's solos. I am not counting on the Screen Snapshots to be included either...maybe a couple, but not all (and at that point, they will probably only use clips and not the whole short). Do all of the Screen Snapshots with the Stooges even exist out there?

Also, will that color footage of the Stooges on set that was reported in the last Journal be included? I hope so. This could be a really great set if done right! Commentaries, home movies,  behind the scenes, lobby card and still galleries, solo shorts, maybe some non-Stooge shorts that were remakes of Stooge comedies, etc.

  • These chronological DVD sets are something I am looking forward to. I managed to collect all 190 shorts and all the Curly-Joe films on VHS and I don't know if my tape collection will be worth keeping. One thing I would like to see in these DVD sets is the 4 MGM shorts the Stooges did with Ted Healy (Nertsery Rhymes, Beer and Pretzels, Plane Nuts, and The Big Idea) as bonus features. Also, I would like to see Kook's Tour released as its own DVD someday.

The Kook's Tour can also be found in the Stooges 75th Anniversary Tin from Madacy. You can find it everywhere and it is cheap, too.
...If you're brave... And if you really want the Kook's Tour.

The other stuff on the set is pretty dodgy, but the talking tin is fab!

That won't be a bonus feature because Sony doesn't have access to that footage. We do know however, that Sony invested some bucks in interviewing the supporting actresses that attended the "reunion" in Burbank earlier this year.  I'm sure that some of that footage will wind up in one of the boxed sets...if not in the first one, then certainly down the road in a future release.

  • I was waiting for this set for years . I have all the 3 stooges dvds that Columbia put out to date . I even own ones that Columbia did not put out (bootlegs lol) My question to every one , is Three Little Beers going to be the crappy edit version they have out on dvd now ? :(

also when is Columbia going to put out the only curly feature film they made at Columbia 1945 Rockin' in the Rockies ?

heres some info I found on the web about the dvd set , dont know if it's 100% right ..

  • Rockin In the Rockies is one feature not out on DVD yet. Two others are the MGM feature Myrt and Marge (1933) and Time Out for Rhythm (1941). I'd love to see those as well as Rockin' in the Rockies on DVD someday.

I couldn't agree more. I'd really love to see those 3 movies released on DVD. Thankfully for now I have all 3 on DVDR so I can enjoy them whenever I feel like.

Since Time Out for Rhythm and Rockin' in the Rockies were both Columbia movies they have a real chance to be released someday. I think if Stooge fans petition hard enough we could get them on DVD finally.

The real longshot would be Myrt and Marge because that wasn't a MGM movie, it was a Universal Picture. It was the only non-MGM movie Healy and the Stooges starred in during their year at MGM. It was never released on VHS so something major would have to take place for the big wigs at Universal to put it on DVD. I had to go on E-Bay to get my copy of Myrt and Marge. It's a vary rare movie, which is a shame because its quite good and Healy and the Stooges are in most of the movie.

BUT, if Warner Brothers was awesome enough to Stooge fans when they released Gold Raiders (1951) and Meet the Baron (1933) last fall in the Classic Comedy Teams Set (in the box set and seperate thankfully) when they had been both been rarely seen and hard to find for decades....I think its very possible we can get Columbia to release Rhythm and Rockies on DVD, maybe even Marge too if we're really lucky.

Anyone else agree? I think its something all Stooge fans need to work toward IMO.

  • lets not forget the 1938 Columbia gem START CHEERING The Stooges play campus firemen at Midland College

also I think Columbia should put clips of all the stooges Cameos from  1933 - TURN BACK THE CLOCK , 1934 - THE CAPTAIN HATES THE SEA , 1941 - TIME OUT FOR RHYTHM (They perform the "Maharaja" routine),& 1942 - MY SISTER EILEEN that would make a nice bonus feature ..

what does any one else think ?

TURN BACK THE CLOCK (1933) was an MGM production, and is owned by Warner Brothers. If Warner Home Entertainment ever does a Lee Tracy set (a major MGM star in the 1930s), that is probably the only chance it has to see a DVD release. Highly unlikely, but possible.

The Stooges costar in TIME OUT FOR RHYTHM; not a cameo. They have approx. 20 minutes of screen time... the Maharaja routine, the Melodrama routine, several scenes with the other stars (Rudy Vallee, Allen Jenkins, Priscilla Lane, Ann Miller, Richard Lane), and a hilarious musical rhumba number with Brenda & Cobina (Elvia Allman and Blanche Stewart).

I agree. It would be great if they released all of Shemp's Columbia solo shorts as extras, including the ones he co-starred with Andy Clyde and the Glove Slinger series. Lobby card and one-sheet galleries would be the icing on the cake. Is this asking too much? I hope not.

  • Hrm...I hate to be a doubting Thomas....but I really don't know if Columbia would release 3 years worth of shorts in a box set for $20.

First of all, you have seen that the current Columbia releases are quite expensive for 4 or 5 shorts!

Secondly, Columbia doesn't hold the rights to the Three Stooges name, Comedy III does, so Columbia has to pay them to release shorts with the Stooges name on them, which is why they cost so much to begin with.

So, unless Comedy III struck a deal with Columbia, I don't think you'll get 3 years worth of shorts for $20.  But hey, I would be wrong, and I hope I am, but wouldn't that make all of the current releases to DVD, obsolete?  That would be horrible, since I tried so hard to get all of those......

  • I preordered the set, but I doubt that they will be remastered beyond their present state, for that price. Also, Amazon has a knack for jumping the gun on upcoming releases. They've been known to put stuff up for preorder, and then it never comes out, or it turns out to be substantially different.

  • I am delighted, delapidated and embalmed to bring you this great news on the Sony DVD boxed set. I just hung up with a publicity man for Sony Home Entertainment and he has confirmed that the first set of chronilogical ordered shorts are being produced for DVD. However, they will not be released on September 18th as posted on Amazon.com. In fact, the earliest release date is the end of October, according to Sony's publicity department. The set will contain all shorts from 1934, 1935 and 1936. The actual title of the set has not been finalized as of yet. There will be bonus features included on this upcoming release. Some that are finalized are a Moe Howard bio; pop up Stooge trivia (on selected shorts); audio commentary (on selected shorts); interviews of surviving female supporting players that were part of a recent convention.

I asked if he can confirm whether or not the shorts will be fully restored versus the remastered video in earlier DVD's. He was not able to confirm as the publicity department does not handle the making of the product. He did state that they will be in black and white only, unlike the last few DVD's that offered the Chromachoice option. He did state that it is Sony's policy to configure all DVD's to high definition, so the likely hood of the shorts being restored to the quality on the Chromachoice discs are a good bet.

Additionally, I asked if he knew of missing scenes, such as in a previous "Three Little Beers" release, will be restored. I also inquired if spliced dialogue would be corrected (as in "Micro Phonies", when Christine McIntyre was explaining her desire to be a radio singer in the control booth). The Sony rep had no idea what I was talking about here. Apparantly, us Stooge fans know more about the product than employees of the studio. Hopefully, they have someone helming this project who is familiar with the films.

Future sets are in the works and a bio on Larry, Curly, Shemp and Joe Besser will appear on future volumes. How far they will go into releasing all 190 shorts was not confirmed. Depending on how well the sets sell will be the ultimate decision, I'm sure. From a general market place point of view, the Curly sets will sell more than the Shemp sets. The Shemp sets will sell more than the Joe Besser set. True blue Three Stooges fans will, of course, support them all. I only hope there are enough of us to have all the shorts deemed worthy to be issued.

  • I have a question for those of you who spent time converting your Three Stooges VHS collection to DVD. Are you people buying these new sets? I'm still deciding whether I should get these new sets or not, since I spent sooooo much time and money coverting my VHS collection to DVD.

I didn't convert anything from VHS, but the quality of professionally encoded DVDs is always superior than VHS sources.   I work for a professional DVD authoring & post-production company.  VHS is the poorest quality of all formats.   The DVD sets vs. home converted VHS sets would be a no brainer for me.

However, I'm not trying to disaprage what you did.  You've put in a lot of time and money into your collection, and if you are happy with it, that's understandable.  You may not want to put down $20 per set for these.   But the fact is, if these DVD sets are released, fan support will be essential to ensure future sets (the complete collection) is released.
These pretzels are making me thirsty!
